About him:
Dr Tan (Dr. Patrick Tan as he is better known) is one of our Consultant Anaesthesiologists. Originally from Kelantan, he did his basic schooling there. He pursued his medical studies at Christian Medical College, Vellore, India and received his degree from Madras University. Following his housemanship at Malacca General Hospital, he served for three years as a medical officer in Kelantan. He then took up training in anaesthesia in Malaysia and United Kingdom. He received his Fellowship in Anaethesiology and has been with Penang Adventist Hospital since then.
Dr Tan has acquired ample experience in anaesthesia in Cardiothoracic Surgery during his training and then in his practice in the Cardiothoracic Unit at Penang Adventist Hospital. His interest in acupuncture for the management of pain enabled him to acquire a competence certificate in the use of Western Acupuncture from the British Medical Acupuncture Society. He provides anaesthetic service in other specialized surgery and Intensive Care. Dr.Tan is also in charge of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Service in Penang Adventist Hospital. He completed his training in hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the US.
Dr Tan is fluent in English, Malay and Hokkien. He is married to Dr Mary Tan and they have two sons. Dr Tan is a believer in fitness and exercises quite regularly. In his spare time he enjoys music and golf.
Dr. Tan has completed Master in Medical Law from University of Northumbria, UK and is involved in the medico-legal aspect of patient-care and risk management. He is the Chairman of Patient Care Review Committee and Clinical Risk Management Committee for the passed several years. He is also the Assistant Vice-President of Medical Administration. Dr. Tan actively participates in the activities organized by the Penang Medical Practitioners’ Society. He is the current President Elect of the Penang Medical Practitioners’ Society.
